Term 3, Week 4. Tuesday 12 August 2025.
PRINCIPAL'S ADDRESS

We recently celebrated one of our most significant school events, St Benedict's Feast Day, as a time for us to honour the rich traditions, values, and faith that form the foundation of our school. In particular we reflect on the example of St Benedict, his enduring legacy and how his teachings continue to inspire and guide the values and mission of our school.
Commencing our Feast Day with a Mass is a meaningful tradition that reflects the heart of our Catholic identity, setting a sacred and spiritual foundation for the day, and reminding us that all we do is centred on Christ and inspired by the teachings of St Benedict. The Eucharist is at the heart of our Catholic faith, and by starting with a Mass, we reaffirm our shared identity as a Catholic school. It is an expression of our commitment to living out the Gospel values and celebrating the faith that unites us as a community.
As St Benedict himself reminds us, “Let them prefer nothing whatever to Christ, and may He bring us all together to everlasting life.”
A highlight of every Feast Day is presenting the St Benedict Hospitality Award and Community Award to deserving members of our community. This year, two Year 12 students were deservedly awarded our St Benedict’s Hospitality Award for their kindness and warmth that they consistently show to others, always ensuring they feel welcome, supported and valued.
Congratulations to Natalie Bohacs and Elissa Boustani, and their proud family members who joined us for the presentation. The St Benedict’s Community Award was presented to Mrs Karen Witherspoon, the current president of our Mater Dei Parents and Friends Association, whose tireless support and generosity has helped our wider school community in immeasurable ways. Karen was also joined by her family for this presentation.

It was wonderful to have so many friends of Mater Dei join us throughout the day, particularly the students from St Patrick’s College, St Gregory’s College and St Mary Star of the Sea College, who joined in on the activities with our students. A particular highlight was finishing the day on the COLA to perform a sit-down dance to the Torres Strait Islander children’s song ‘Taba Naba’, followed by a disco.

I extend our heartfelt thanks to everyone who contributed to the success of this day. From the dedicated staff who organised the events, to the students who participated with enthusiasm, and to the families who supported us in prayer and presence; we are truly blessed to have such a strong and supportive community.

Last week we farewelled Sarah Ryan as she finished in her role as the Director of Development at Mater Dei. Sarah is no doubt known to many families across our Organisation and she will be sadly missed after seven years at Mater Dei. On behalf of everyone in our school and the wider community I express deep gratitude for all that Sarah has done in her role and for the wonderful ambassador that she has been for Mater Dei.
I wish Sarah continued success as she ventures into her new role as the Chief Executive Officer of The Kids of Macarthur Health Foundation where she will continue to provide wonderful leadership in her quest for supporting others.

On Thursday 28 August, we will have the official blessing and opening of our school Covered Outdoor Learning Area (COLA). Bishop Brian Mascord will officiate over the event where we will also acknowledge the funding and support from the NSW Premier’s Office, the Campbelltown Catholic Club and various Mater Dei donors and sponsors who made the building of our COLA possible. The ceremony will be held in the Sr Carmela Ritchie School Hall commencing at 9.30am, followed by morning tea. Parents and Carers are welcome to join us and a Compass post with the information has been sent out with an
RSVP required by 21 August for catering purposes.
Please confirm your attendance by emailing schooladmin@materdei.org.au

Mater Dei Alumni Jack Conroy (Class of 2023) recently visited Mater Dei and we were very excited to hear about his recent success on the track. Jack competed in the 2025 NSW Short Course Cross Country Championships on Saturday July 12 in Dapto, finishing with a gold medal in the Open Men’s Para 2km run. This is Jack's first senior medal while also achieving a massive 19 second personal best! Jack has been selected to represent NSW in the Open Men’s Para 3km Cross Country run at the National Cross Country Championships in Ballarat and we wish him continued success. He is certainly an inspiration to our students.

In honour of the Feast of St Mary of the Cross MacKillop, on Friday 8 August,
Loving God,
We thank You for the life and example of Saint Mary MacKillop,
Australia’s first saint, who devoted her life to serving You and others.
Inspired by her faith and courage, may we follow her example
of compassion, humility, and trust in Your providence.
Help us to live with a heart full of love,
to stand up for justice,
and to care for the dignity of every person, as Mary did.
May we always remember her words:
"Never see a need without doing something about it."
Guide us to serve others with kindness and selflessness,
and to work together to build communities of hope and love.
Through the intercession of Saint Mary MacKillop,
we ask for Your blessings upon our Mater Dei community,
our families, and all those in need.
We pray this in Jesus’ name.
Amen.
Saint Mary of the Cross MacKillop,
Pray for us.

Good Samaritan Education Triennial Conference:
Ever Ancient Ever New
Mater Dei School Executive staff recently attended the Good Samaritan Education Triennial Conference. The conference brings together educators, leaders, and community members from all Good Samaritan Education schools to reflect on our shared mission of faith, learning, and service. Rooted in the Benedictine tradition and inspired by the parable of the Good Samaritan, this year’s conference explored the theme “Ever Ancient, Ever New”, calling us to embrace the enduring wisdom of our faith while responding to the evolving needs of our world.
The theme, “Ever Ancient, Ever New,” invited us to delve into the richness of our Catholic and Benedictine heritage while reimagining how these traditions speak to the realities of modern education. It reminded us that the values of compassion, justice, and community, as modelled by the Good Samaritan, remain as relevant today as they were in ancient times.
This timeless vision challenges us to balance the preservation of our spiritual foundations with innovative approaches to teaching, learning, and community building here at Mater Dei School. As Catholic educators, we are called to integrate these enduring values into the lives of our students, ensuring they are equipped to navigate the complexities of the contemporary world.
Highlights of the conference included:
- Living the Benedictine Values Today: Exploring how the Rule of St Benedict continues to shape our practices of hospitality, humility, and stewardship.
- Faith and Innovation in Education: Reimagining curriculum and pedagogy to nurture students’ spiritual, intellectual, and emotional growth.
- Ecological Conversion: Reflecting on Pope Francis’ Laudato Si’ and how we can deepen our commitment to care for creation.
The conference was a powerful reminder of the importance of shared wisdom and collaboration. Educators from across the Good Samaritan Education network exchanged ideas, experiences, and best practices, strengthening bonds and deepening our collective commitment to transforming lives through education.
True to the spirit of Good Samaritan Education, the conference was not only a professional gathering but also a deeply spiritual experience. Participants joined in moments of prayer, liturgy, and reflection, taking time to reconnect
with the ancient traditions that underpin our mission. These sacred moments encouraged us to reflect on how our faith guides and sustains us in our daily work.
As we return to Mater Dei School, the theme “Ever Ancient, Ever New” challenges us to carry forward the enduring values of our faith while embracing fresh opportunities to serve our students and communities. Together, we are called to reimagine Catholic education as a transformative force for good—one that honours the wisdom of the past and courageously responds to the needs of the future.

2025 NAPLAN Participation and Support for Students with Disability
At Mater Dei School, we are proud to have supported the diverse learning needs of all our students during NAPLAN testing.
This year, 15 of our students in Years 3, 5, 7 and 9 participated in NAPLAN, and it was wonderful to witness the effort and commitment that each student made throughout the assessment which made this a positive experience.
It is important to remember that NAPLAN tests are just one aspect of our school’s assessment and reporting process. They complement, but do not replace, the extensive, ongoing assessments conducted by teachers throughout the year. Teachers have the closest understanding of each student’s educational progress and are best placed to provide insights into their strengths and areas for growth.
Parents and carers can use NAPLAN results, along with other school assessments, to develop a clear picture of their child’s progress.
While NAPLAN data provides valuable insights into specific areas of literacy and numeracy, it is important to note that NAPLAN results do not measure overall school quality.
At Mater Dei School, we use the NAPLAN results as a tool to help us reflect on individual and collective progress and to tailor our teaching approaches to better meet the needs of our students.
We are committed to ensuring that as many Mater Dei students as possible can access NAPLAN testing.
This reflects our dedication to inclusion and equity, as well as our Catholic values of celebrating the unique gifts and potential of every child.
All parents are encouraged to consider their child’s participation in NAPLAN in coming years.

- In readiness to leave, vehicles remain turned off until the flag is raised to indicate that all students and other adults are within the vehicle.
- Vehicles leave the area when a staff member removes the safety bollard.
- All vehicles must exit and enter Mater Dei grounds at 40km/h.
- Speed limit changes to 10km/h as vehicles move past the Mater Dei Early Childhood entrance. This applies to arriving and leaving the Mater Dei site.

Compass consenting for Excursions, Community Based Instruction or other events at Mater Dei School
As part of our continual improvement of processes and procedures at Mater Dei School, parents and caregivers will notice a change when consenting for Excursions and other events for their child.
Community Based Instruction (CBI), excursions or other events often include more than one occasion under the same consent notification. Compass will now prompt parents and caregivers to acknowledge that they are consenting for a number of dates that the event may include.
For example, some classes attend CBI to Woolworths across a number of weeks as part of their learning. Parents and caregivers will now be asked to acknowledge that they understand this to be the case.
Thank you for supporting this change in procedure.

SCHOOL NEWS
MISSION & VISION
Last Friday, some of our School Leaders, together with Mrs Sillis and Mrs Gorey attended a Mass with Bishop Brian, at the Wollongong Cathedral. The Mass celebrated the Feast Day of Saint Mary MacKillop. Saint Mary MacKillop (1842-1909)
Australia's first saint, Mary MacKillop dedicated her life to educating children, especially those in rural and disadvantaged communities. Born in Melbourne, she co-founded the Sisters of St Joseph in 1866 and established schools across Australia that welcomed children regardless of their family's ability to pay the school fees. Known for her courage, compassion, and unwavering commitment to social justice, Mary faced significant challenges including temporary excommunication, yet never wavered in her mission to serve God through education and care for the poor. She was canonised by Pope Benedict XVI in 2010, and her Feast Day is celebrated on August 8th. Saint Mary MacKillop remains an inspiring example of faith in action and dedication to Catholic education.

Today, all of our Year 6 students attended a Mass with Bishop Brian and other Year 6 students from across the Diocese. Ms Foldes, Kim D and Ms Fahey also participated in the Mass, at Mary Immaculate Church, Eagle Vale. Our students did a wonderful job contributing to the Mass with their singing and responding. The students continued to join in the fun with their peers, by playing handball and having a dance!

WELLBEING
This term, we are excited to introduce a new Transition Time Circle routine, designed to help students smoothly shift from break time back into the classroom, ready to learn with focus and joy.
The Transition Time Circle takes place immediately after break time, providing students with a moment to pause, reflect, and reconnect.
During this routine, students:
- Share a positive moment from break time, celebrating their social interactions and successes.
- Hear clear expectations for the upcoming lesson to ensure a shared understanding of what’s next.
- Engage in a short positive activity or reflection to set a calm and positive mindset for learning.
This routine is a powerful way to support students in reflecting on their break time, reconnecting with their peers and teacher, and preparing their minds and hearts for the next part of their day.
We look forward to seeing the positive impact this routine will have on our students' sense of belonging and their ability to transition into learning with calmness and confidence.

CURRICULUM
Kindergarten have started a new unit of work in Science and Technology this term that focuses on engineering. The students will be introduced to the concept of design in the natural world, examining animal-built structures like nests and burrows, and they will draw upon this knowledge to design their own shelter for a pet that will meet its needs. Students will follow the Engineering Design Process to solve a problem.
The first couple of lessons have introduced key vocabulary such as shelter, shade, problem. A wonder story was shared with the class so they could understand a real-world problem of getting too hot in the playground and thinking about how they could solve this problem such as finding shade, wearing a hat or having an ice water drink.
The students made ice cubes then added water to drink to see if their body felt cooler. Another part of their learning is to know what technology is. Firstly they explored low tech objects to see how they help us to solve problems such as pegs to hang clothes, tongs to pick up food and a toothbrush to clean dirty teeth. K Samaritan students are learning through active engagement with hands on materials.

SPORT NEWS

- Kiaan - Junior Boys Multi Class Age Champion
- Sequoia - Junior Girls Multi Class Age Champion
- Ava - Junior Girls Multi Class Runner Up
- Emma - Junior Girls Multi Class third place
The students will now progress to the Mackillop Championships later in the term.

WORKPLACE LEARNING
Semester Block 2 of workplace learning is now underway.
Students are completing orientations of the workplace and meeting their new supervisors and team members.
Business hosts are providing students with a warm friendly welcome. Many have commented that they are happy to see the students back in the workplace after the holiday break.
We look forward to a new term of our students gaining invaluable hands-on experience through work placements, building confidence and skills as they prepare for post school life.

MAISEY'S CORNER
Last term, our Year 12 students explored the theme of Problem-Solving in the Workplace and Community, with a particular focus on careers involving dogs. As part of their learning experiences, students learned about the important work of sniffer dog handlers, assistance dog handlers, animal trainers, and shelter workers, gaining insight into the skills and responsibilities required in these roles.
To put their learning into action, students were tasked with a creative project centred around our school support dog, Maisy. Their challenge was to design either an enrichment activity to support Maisy’s mental and emotional wellbeing or a custom coat to keep her comfortable as she continues to serve our school community.
Maisy has already enjoyed testing out some of the enrichment activities, and her new coats will ensure she stays cosy and stylish while she brightens the lives of staff and students alike.
Through this practical, real-world task, students not only deepened their learning but also developed valuable skills such as teamwork, critical thinking, and creativity. We are proud of their efforts and grateful for the opportunity to celebrate the role dogs like Maisy play in workplaces and communities.

School Student Concession Cards
If you're a student aged 16 years or older and eligible for concessions, the Transport Concession Entitlement Card serves as proof of entitlement when using a Child/Youth Opal card within the Opal network or when traveling on child or concession fares in NSW.
The Transport Concession Entitlement Card replaces the following cards:
- Senior Secondary Student Concession Card (16 years and over) – also issued to Mature Secondary Students (18 years and over), Distance Education Students and Home School Students.
- Proof of Age card (when a student under 16 years of age looks older)
- Boarders Rail Pass
To travel on a Child/Youth Opal card or a child/concession ticket, students must carry a concession entitlement card.

Children aged between 4 to 15 years do not require a proof of entitlement for concession travel. However, if they look more mature, they can get a Transport Concession Entitlement Card to verify to authorised officers that they are under 16 years old.
Please contact Mater Dei School Admin on schooladmin@materdei.org.au if you are interested in applying for a Concession Entitlement card.
